Description
The Sanibel Island Light, or Point Ybel Light, was one of the first lighthouses on Florida's Gulf coast north of Key West and the Dry Tortugas. The light, 98-foot above sea level, on an iron skeleton tower was first lit on August 20, 1884 and has a central spiral staircase beginning about 10 feet above the ground. Somehow, the Sanibel Island Lighthouse managed to withstand Hurricane Ian's 150 mph winds and 8-to-15-foot storm surge in September 2022. Though it's still standing, the illuminated lens-bearing metal structure is in danger of collapse. The keepers' houses surrounding it for more than a century were leveled in the storm. This image was captured earlier in 2022 before the hurricane.
