Description
Established in 1860, shortly before the Civil War, the Old Port Washington (Wisconsin) Lighthouse dates from a time when the western shore of Lake Michigan was still partly wilderness. Shining from a bluff overlooking the lake, the light marked a busy little harbor a few miles north of Milwaukee. After nearly 75 years of service, the light was removed from the rooftop lantern at the original station and placed in a concrete tower at the end of the harbor breakwater. The lighthouse, restored to its original appearance by the Port Washington Historical Society, now operates as a museum. This image was captured at dusk at a distance from the harborfront.
